The DoF in collaboration with the Department of Forest Research and Survey (DFRS), Federation of Community Forest Users Nepal (FECOFUN), Association of Collaborative Forest Users Nepal (ACOFUN), and ForestAction Nepal is going to organize a 3-days "National Workshop on Silviculture" on the particular theme of "Silviculture for Sustainable Forest Management" on 1-3 February, 2017. The main objectives of the workshop are to stocktaking and appraisal of silvicultural practices in Nepal along with the review of policy, act, rules and guidelines' provision and practices in terms of application of silviculture operation in forest management. This is primarily aimed at developing a common understanding among key stakeholders to make silvicultural system based sustainable forest management (SFM) a key strategic priority in the forestry sector.

Specific Objectives of the workshop are as follows:

  • Identify and analyse evidence based silvicultural practices piloted and implemented in various forest types by the government and non-government organisations;
  • Review legal provisions, guidelines and practices in implementing silviculture and identify bottlenecks in expanding silviculture based forest management throughout the country;
  • Assess risks and uncertainties in extending Scientific and Sustainable forest management (SFM) intervention and design appropriate safeguard measures;
  • Create a common understanding among participants on appropriate silviculture prescriptions for different types of forests; and
  • Provide recommendations for developing detailed guidelines based on agreed silvicultural prescriptions for various forest types.
